A 3D sign comes alive in the Robert Zemeckis film Back to the Future II

3D imagery has been around for as long as the moving picture as 3D film was being used as early as 1890. However, it was in the 1950’s that 3D movies had its golden age when a multitude of cinema films were made in 3D.

          ]]>

However, 3D cinema is going through a renaissance with the development of 3D TV expected to be the next big step in home entertainment. And while most 3D systems require the viewer to be wearing 3D glasses, a type of 3D TV is being developed that requires no glasses at all.

The potential of 3D TV in the out of home advertising and outdoor digital signage market is huge – especially if glasses-free 3D TV becomes a viable and working technology.

Imagine walking down the high street and passing outdoor digital signage systems where the content leapt out in front of you, it may seem like a scene out of the 1980’s science fiction film Back to the Future but the technology for glasses-free 3D digital signage is already here.

Autostereoscopy is one method of providing 3d imagery without the need for special 3D glasses. There are disadvantages with the technology such as there being only certain points of view where the 3D effect works and there has also been complaints of headaches and eye strain from users who have indulged in prolonged viewing.

However, with all infant technologies, autostereoscopy is constantly being improved and it is expected that 3D TV technologies will play a big part in the coming decade.

One of the most exciting applications for this type of 3D technology is in the outdoor digital signage market. We have already seen over the last few years how much more attractive dynamic advertising and signage is compared to regular print media and it is possible that this up and coming 3D technology will make conventional outdoor digital signage seem as hackneyed as print media appears today.

3D movies have made a substantial come back in recent years, gone are the days of drive in movies with those red and blue cardboard specs that made aliens and monsters loom over us. Now we can get the sharp picture we have come to expect from high definition movies and sports but in full colour and freakishly realistic images jumping out the screen at us. More and more movies are coming out at the cinema in 3D and to make the most of that experience when we get the movie on DVD or Blu-Ray we'll need a TV capable of rendering these images correctly and so there is a growing army of 3D TVs now available and knowing which one to buy is a question on everyone's lips.

The main factor that makes a TV a 3D capable TV is having a fast enough refresh rate, this relates to how quickly the picture is updated on the screen, this figure needs to be 120hz or faster. This makes sure the image can be shown properly and will work well when you want to get a 3D image that makes you think you are really there.

          ]]>

At the moment in order to be able to watch a 3D movie or broadcast properly you will need a set of specialist glasses, this is one factor to consider when buying any 3D TV, as some may only come with 2 or 4 sets of glasses, you will obviously want a pair for each member of the family and if you have more people then you may have to fork out extra money on them. Also it may be worth looking into how much these glasses cost as you could need to buy replacements if you break them such as sitting on them!

One of the biggest surprises when people come to buy 3D TVs is that you could get a 3D Plasma TV or a 3D LCD TV, the technology is not exclusive to either side but there are some things to bear in mind such as Plasma TVs don't have as much trouble with motion blur but any static images could be ‘burnt-in' to the screen so you'll have to make sure that you don't leave the TV on the same image for prolonged periods to keep the picture free of any ghosting or burnt in images which can become difficult to remove on some set.

3D Movies and sports are becoming more and more popular so if you are looking to buy a new 3D TV make sure to do your research and check them out yourself first to avoid any problems further down the line.

3D technology proves its success not only in the market but also in classrooms. 3D TV, Blue-ray players and gaming devices are becoming popular in the market; many people are buying them and enjoying it. The 3D technology is not only getting positive responses from the market also, its learning tools have proved its success.

A recent survey in US revealed that the consumers prefer buying 3D Televisions over 2D or HD technology TVs. The study performed by research firm Fran N Magid Associates on behalf of Panasonic, during the recent Disney D23 Expo.

According to the researchers around three quarters of the US consumers have found 3D technology better than 2D. Around 71% people agreed to buy 3D TV over 2D TV, while the 27% found its experience fabulous. And the additional 50% people wished to have a 3D TV.

The research supported belief of Panasonic's Chief Technology Officer Eisuke Tsuyuzaki. Before the study, he was quite sure that more people would favor 3D TV once they experience it.

          ]]>

In a recent study that took place at the Abbey School in Reading proves its success. The study led by Ros Johnson, a biology teacher, found average of 17% improvement in results. In the study, they had given lessons of body organs with 3D projection. The projection helped students to understand in a better manner and added a new aspect to learning.

Across Europe the research, done in 7 schools and they found that children are concentrating more. 3D enabled learning tools are helping them and led shy students to participate in discussions. These tools provide a wow factor in the class.

The International Research Agency on behalf of Texas Instruments, conducted this research in schools across Turkey, Germany, Netherlands, Italy, France, Sweden and the UK.

740 students were involved in the study and they were tested prior to and following the lessons with a control group learning only through the traditional resources. And the result was quite amazing, 86% of students in 3D classrooms got better test results than 52% using traditional techniques.

Their attention levels also increased, 92% students were paying attention in the class during 3D lessons than 46% in the traditional environment.

Both surveys prove success of 3D Televisions, market is flooded with various gadgets and TVs but nowadays 3D devices are on high demand. This is not just because of new technology also it offers better entertainment experience. However, to experience 3D content you require 3D glasses but companies are working on another technology that will allow you to watch 3D content without any glass.

Toshiba has already introduced its first 3D TV and claims without glasses 3D viewing in Oct 2010. 3DFusion was a pioneer in this technology. The company revealed its glasses free TVs at the CES event in 2009 and setup a demo display for public.

There has been plenty of rumors and critics about 3d TVs and how it may dominate the TV market. One market research team projects the 3D HD TV industry to expand over 4 times in the next 9 yrs. This means that nearly all shows you watch... sports, movies, etc on a TV will soon be in a 3D format.

There's a few hints you should realize before you buy a 3D TV. For example: Is a blue-ray player needed to view 3D movies? YES. Is 3D a lot more expensive? Nope not really. Can you view 2D television (normal quality)? Yes you can switch back and forth from 2D to 3D.

A 3D display on a 2D surface is basically stereo for your eyes. One right image and one left. In fact 3D pictures and video is sometimes done by using left and right lenses that are slightly off set. How offset? Its Exactly off set as a pair of human eyes. Its about 4 inches or 7 centimeters. Its called stereopsis. The brain thinks its looking at a 3d image because its seeing 2 different pictures, from 2 different angles. The same 2 viewing angles as your eyes. This tricks your mind into seeing depth. Right now TV buisness can project those 2 images on to one screen at the same time without making them unclear and it cost to much to have 2 different TVs for each eye. This is how there able to mislead your brain into seeing 3D images on the screen.

          ]]>

3D TVs currently falls into 2 different categories. 3D movies you watch with active shutter glasses and 3D HD TV you view with polarized glasses.

This is how active shutter functions. The glasses are fueled by batteries and our linked to an emitter in your 3D television. The emitter sends radio or info-red signals to your glasses and tells each lens of the glasses to either open or close. Kinda of like a window shutter. This happens in-sync with quick flashing right or left images on the screen. This all happens over a hundred times a second. This is why its nearly impossible to turn your LED TVs or a Plasma television into 3D. This refresh rate is also known as the HZ.

Alright so your aware about active shutter glasses, but that's not the only way to see 3D. If you've seen Alice in Wonderland or Avatar in the movie theater you were using polarized glasses, just like shutter glasses. Polarized lenses lets you see different slightly off-set images in each eye. Fooling your mind into watching 3D, Movie theatrs have two differnt projectors flashing both right and left pictures on the screen. It all works and syncs together because it lets your left eye to see only the left image and your right eye only to see the right image and also polorized lense are not battery powered because there passive.

Gamers tend to be first in line when it comes to cutting-edge technology that delivers a virtual challenge to fully immerse themselves in. With the arrival of 3D TV, the potential for previously unheard of interactivity is now becoming an exciting reality.

Leading gaming manufacturers realise the potential of this new technology to scale new heights of engagement for users, and are investing heavily in making sure that they keep up with rising gamer demand for 3D content. Currently, there are over 500 first person shooters, flight simulators, car racing and puzzle solving games available in 3D on the market, with the figure set to increase dramatically in the near future.

          ]]>

The factor that is most exciting to gamers and game developers alike is that the sophisticated and realistic 3D viewing experience opens the doors to a new generation of creative and challenging possibilities.

Virtual Realism at Its Best

For gamers more than others, it's crucial for their virtual world to feel as real as possible in order to thoroughly absorb the players and truly engage their interactive interest. In addition to rendering authentic realism when it comes to the images, it is just as important to involve gamers emotionally in the plotline, to keep the virtual challenges they face exciting.

Popular games such as Lemmings, Super Mario, Tanks and Worms have never relied on providing realistically immersive worlds, preferring to offer the gamer a simple yet addictive environment that taps into the pleasure of problem solving without a serious learning investment. In contrast, the vivid games that 3D TV is capable of, offers an unprecedented experience for interactive immersion within vivid alternative realities.

Examples of games that would benefit from a more captivating 3D world include Battlefield 1942, Call of Duty, Medal of Honour and Half Life. These games are first person shooters and generally follow a storyline plot, with problems to solve and high octane action sequences. The gamer is the main character and the world is seen through the eyes of their on-screen avatar, who moves through landscapes that are often incredibly detailed to find clues, bonuses and of course kill as many nefarious enemies as possible. It's interesting to imagine the kind of wow factor that these already popular games would offer if rendered into glorious 3D.

Tips for Finding the Best 3D TV for Gaming Demands

As a discerning and demanding gamer who wants to take full advantage of the superbly realistic virtual world that 3D is capable of delivering, you'll want your 3D TV to deliver some key features.

Here are some tips for gamers when shopping around:

You'll want high resolution levels and frame rates as this will provide the smooth imagery during fast action scenes and intense levels of detail that bring your 3D game to life. Any 3D TV model you choose must be capable of displaying no less than 720p50, 720p60 or 1080p24 resolutions.
To keep up with fast moving images, the refresh rate of your 3D TV will be crucial. While the minimum refresh rate for any 3D TV is 120Hz, this might be inadequate for gamers who need to push their hardware to the limit. As a rule of thumb, you'll find 240Hz adequate, but if your budget allows, an even higher refresh rate would be better. Plasma TV displays tend to have an estimated refresh rate of around 600Hz, while LCD's generally offer up to 480Hz - be aware however that the eye is generally incapable of differentiating between the two levels, so 480Hz will be fine unless you're the type who insists on nothing but the best.
LCD/LED TV's tend to have higher contrast ratios and brighter screens, so in an ideal world as a gamer you'd go for an LCD/LED screen with a good refresh rate.

Buying any TV will be a big decision for most people, with the prices being higher up the average consumer electronics purchase spectrum you'll want to spend wisely to not just get something cheap and nasty or something that is far too expensive for your budget. Getting the balance right when buying household electronics is easy to do if you take the time to research your purchase and shop around to find the best deals.

3D TVs are the latest must-have bit of technology kit for the home, with images that jump out of the screen at you it brings a new dimension to your home entertainment, literally! There are some things to bear in mind when looking at 3D televisions and many of these include technical specifications that you may not be aware of when setting foot in your local TV shop.

First of all, most people will be concerned with one specification above all others: the size. The size of TVs these days is much larger than in the past, common sizes for modern TVs, both 3D and non-3D, include 42 inches and even 60 inches and above. Obviously the larger the screen the more your front room will feel like a cinema multiplex but this may not always be the desired effect.

          ]]>

Measure your room and consider the viewing angles from all seats before deciding on the size, most 3D TVs will work at a wider viewing angle but obviously being able to see the TV at a decent size will provide the best viewing experience. Some people have mocked up a TV out of newspaper to gauge which size looks best and doesn't dominate the room.

One of the main 3D related specifications people are looking out for is the refresh rate of the TV. This determines how quickly the image is updated on the screen; the most common 3D technology uses alternating frames to quickly and seamlessly create a 3D image. This means your TV set needs to have a quick refresh rate (anything higher than 120 Hz) to effectively be classed as "3D capable". Many sets are capable of much quicker speeds and this will help to make the image more smooth and natural, as well as making sure that fast paced images such as sport don't end up looking blurry.

Lastly most 3D televisions will come with some form of 3D glasses as we're still a few years away from glasses-less 3D TVs unfortunately. This means in order to watch a 3D game, movie or broadcast you'll need to be wearing these glasses, some families may need extra glasses or some TV sets come with a full family's set of glasses. These glasses can be expensive to replace too, so make sure to keep them safe.

Most TV companies will be able to let you test 3D sets in store to get a taste of this technology, some pubs even show football or boxing matches in 3D too. So make sure you're comfortable with this technology before buying as some people can become nauseous, these modern TVs are less likely to produce this side effect but it is worthwhile considered when looking to buy a 3D TV.

3D TV is finally here and companies and TV stations have already started producing films and programs for broadcasting in this exciting new technology. The release of the 3D TV technology, however, is not yet widely known amongst all. Just as we are digesting the release of high definition TV, television manufacturers invade the shelves with a new technology: 3D.is riding on the success of films like "Avatar". Samsung, Sony, Panasonic, LG and Philips have had 3D TV models released that are capable of broadcasting images in 3D TV. Sharp and Toshiba will launch later in the year. 3D TVs are expected to represent 10-15% of sales this year.

There are many questions that need to be answered and many people are still wandering if 3D TV is worth investing in. From the initial impressions, 3D TV looks to give some stunning results. But the programs remain rare and programs for the platform are not yet widely available. So should we rush to buy 3D TV? Lets learn a bit more and address some of the common questions.

Yes, because it has been around for years. For the case of understanding in simple terms, 3D images are filmed by two different cameras, one for the right eye and one for the left eye. During their broadcasting on screen, the brain assembles the two pieces of information together into one to form complete 3D images. When watching 3D TV, the viewer really develops a feeling of being immersed in the action.

          ]]>

For the time being, yes. All manufacturers are supplying 3D glasses that are meant to be used to watch the TV. But the spectacles are heavy and moreover inconsistent from one brand to another. Toshiba, Sharp and Hitachi showed prototypes of 3D screens without glasses, but have not yet announced a release date.

For the moment, there is not much. The UK satellite TV supplier Sky has started broadcasting some channels for 3D, but this is relatively small in the scheme of things. The channel broadcasted key football games throughout the world cup and continues to add more programming for 3D but we will need to wait a little longer before the mainstream channels are broadcasted in 3D.

Yes. 3D TVs are also capable of broadcasting images in 2D, so you don't have to worry whether they will accept your current collection of movies and games. Conversely, to watch the new Blu-ray topography, you need to buy a suitable reader, because the first generation devices do not read them. Same thing applies to consoles. The first 3D video games are not expected before the end of the year and only Sony has so far announced an update of its PS3 console this summer to allow users to play 3D games.

As going to the cinema, it is not unusual to experience fatigue, and even a headache when watching 3D. The brain is having to reconstruct the stereoscopic images and it can be stressful in the long run, especially if the scenes are very choppy. Also note that 5-10% of people suffer from "stereo blindness": they do not perceive the depth of images, even when wearing 3D glasses. In other words, they will not see the difference between a conventional TV and a 3D screen. It is therefore advisable to test the process in-store before purchase.
